Unit 3

Darted Cup + Sgrafifto

Planning: I made a practice darted cup to figure out how to make them, and then moved onto designing and making my third and final one. For the Sgrafifto I modled it after the cover of Radiohead's album Kid A.

Construction: To start, I first made a slab, then I connected the ends. Then I made the triangle cuts on the corners and darted them in, then added the bottom and base. Then I coated the sides with underglaze, and gave it enough time to dry before carving in the sgrafifto. And then carved and fired it.

The final product of the piece came out very well. Some errors in construction that could be issues is that the darts were uneven, which makes it slightly off balance. The seam is a little imperfect, it never fully stayed together, in the final piece you can see a little gap on the seam. These errors could be fixed by a little more depth of knowledge.

Unit 4

Master Artwork made 3D

Planning: My master work made 3D is Jungle by Alexander Calder. I chose this piece because I thought it would look interesting in 3D, and it was really beautiful and interesting.

Construction: I grabbed a piece of clay which I made into a hooked moon like shape, I then carved out holes into that shape to hollow it out, and because the piece had holes in it I saw that as a chance to incorporate that into the piece. I then put all the "spikes" on. I underglazed the piece and carved out the sgrafifto.

The finished product came out very nicely and I am proud. I was worried the black I put on would not be fully black and luckily it was perfect! If I were to remake this I would have made it a bit larger so I had more to work with.

Handles; "The Mess"

Planning: My goal for this project was to make something "stupid" and "useless." I also wanted it to look messy and really colorful.

Construction: I started by making a really uneven pinch pot, that would become a cup that could absolutely never be used. I then added a bunch of handles, which are probably in the least optimal places, and started underglazing wildly with a bunch of different colors.

The finished product was very nice, and not as messy as I'd like but I would say I met all my goals. If I were to make this again, I'd rather throw it on the wheel (if I could do that) to make a different shape and then mess that up. I'd also like to have more complicated designs in the underglaze. Also, making nicer handles would have been good.

Poem Response

PLANNING: The poem I chose spoke of a sunrise on a mountain. Initially, I had no idea how to do that, so after thinking for a while I came up with the idea of making a mountain with a sun on it that made bursting colors.

CONSTRUCTION: I began by making a spike-like mountain shape, carved the inside of that out and made bends and folds that could give it a more mountainous shape. I then painted on the sun to one side. I strayed away from my plan with having the sun be bursting colors, as I don't really understand how to do that with underglaze yet, instead I made each side have a different color and carved little designs into each.

REFLECTION: The finished product did not come out as I had planned but it came out really amazing and beautiful regardless. I hope it is representative of the poem. If I were to do this again I'd make a different shape for the mountain and get more complicated with my underglaze painting.
